Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions are a world-leading original equipment manufacturer, committed to improving customer productivity and profitability. Their constantly evolving offering includes equipment and tools, service and technical solutions for mining and rock excavation.

The challenge

Sandvik secured a significant purchase agreement to become the sole provider of underground mobile mining equipment, automation and aftermarket parts for a global mining customer in 2020.

The scope of the landmark agreement is valued at $249 million over a six-year lifespan. It includes the implementation of mining fleets, technology and product support for four mines in Australia.

The anticipated benefits of the new partnership include increased safety, productivity and a reduction in the total cost of ownership for the mining client.

To assist in effectively establishing, building and operating this new partnership, Escient was engaged by Sandvik to scope and support a change management-led approach for implementation. A successful outcome required both Sandvik and their customer to work collaboratively on commissioning a large, complex scope of work in a very short period of time.

The approach

    Background

    On commencement of the contract for the fleet implementation, Sandvik engaged Escient to facilitate a change management workshop with key representatives from Sandvik and its mining client. Escient undertook a Change-led approach with a focus on:

    • Identifying current barriers to change for team members
    • Empowering team members to initiate a change impact assessment
    • Providing tools and techniques in assessing, planning and delivering change
    • Establishing a single team, way of working and means to deliver the whole scope of change

     

    Discovery

    Prior to the first workshop, Escient reviewed project documentation, interviewed team members, conducted change management analysis, and facilitated the development of a joint vision for the large mining fleet implementation with the project’s sponsors.

    During the workshop, Escient guided the formation of four cross-functional, cross-organisational teams, each focused on a distinct aspect of the project scope. This facilitation allowed each team to agree upon a ‘charter’ to guide their planned practical next steps.

      

    Delivery

    Escient’s approach in facilitating this fleet implementation has helped Sandvik with the successful managing of change to support the delivery of mining fleet, technology and aftermarket support processes for their mining client.

    Based on the success of this engagement, Sandvik and its mining client have continued to employ Escient as their change management partner for large mining fleet implementations and other advisory services
