Airservices Australia is a government-owned organisation responsible for the safe and efficient management of 11 per cent of the world’s airspace and the provision of aviation rescue firefighting services at Australia’s busiest airports. They connect people with their world safely – linking family and friends, generating economic activity, creating jobs, and facilitating trade and tourism.

The challenge

As a means of proactively supporting the management of its transformation program and as a mechanism for driving greater efficiency and reliability for the organisation and its stakeholders, the team at Airservices was keen to establish a robust monitoring system for streamlined reporting of project data. While actively executing a portfolio re-categorisation and refinement of their governance structure, the organisation understood that there was a clear demand for a comprehensive assessment of project data to ensure robust data integrity and data mapping practices were in place to set the stage for future improvements.

The approach

Escient initiated its approach by thoroughly reviewing datasets from various sources, such as MS Project Server, SAP, and other databases, encompassing over 300 projects to verify their accuracy and completeness. Utilising a custom-built toolset, our team was able to efficiently aggregate and analyse this data, subsequently developing another tool to facilitate Airservices’ data re-mapping tasks before integration into an external reporting system. The team also used a combination of online surveys and workshops with key stakeholders for a governance review, focusing on visualising current projects and governance frameworks.

The outcome

Escient’s engagement culminated in tangible outcomes for Airservices. We were able to deliver an in-depth analysis of project data, pinpointing areas needing improvement, and provided tools tailored for efficient data remapping tasks. Our team also presented senior business stakeholders with a thorough review of over 140 governance forums across ten Change Programs, emphasising challenges and offering actionable recommendations for future enhancements.
