Airservices Australia is a government-owned organisation responsible for the safe and efficient management of 11 per cent of the world’s airspace and the provision of aviation rescue firefighting services at Australia’s busiest airports. They connect people with their world safely – linking family and friends, generating economic activity, creating jobs, and facilitating trade and tourism.

The challenge

Airservices Australia embarked on a strategic initiative to enhance its portfolio governance, focusing on improving the management and efficiency of its key Change Programs. This effort focused on ensuring the integrity and alignment of project data through enhanced data management practices, laying a strong foundation for future advancements.

The approach

Our collaboration with Airservices Australia began with a detailed analysis of project-level risk data from various sources across multiple key projects within a high-priority Change Program.

Using a specialised toolset developed by Escient for Airservices Australia, our team performed an in-depth analysis to understand the current state of data management. This phase was crucial in identifying areas requiring immediate attention and remediation.

A critical element of our approach was a workshop that brought together key stakeholders, which was crucial for fostering a cohesive strategy for managing risk data. This workshop and tailored follow-up meetings with program and project managers focused on critically refining the quality of risk data entries. Our efforts focused on refining details, root causes, and ratings to ensure precision. Beyond immediate quality enhancements, these sessions served as a valuable upskilling opportunity, equipping managers with the skills and tools necessary to sustain these enhancements long-term.

The outcome

The collaboration between Escient and Airservices Australia culminated in notable achievements that enhanced governance and efficiency across a key Change Program:

    In-depth risk data analysis

A comprehensive analysis of risk data helped pinpoint critical areas requiring enhancement and informed subsequent improvement strategies, ensuring targeted and effective interventions.

    Stakeholder upskilling<br>

Through targeted training sessions and a comprehensive workshop, stakeholders were equipped with essential skills and knowledge to manage risks effectively. A specially developed manual from these sessions was also provided to ensure consistent training for new staff, promoting ongoing educational continuity.

    Refined risk register

The project successfully delivered an updated risk register, which now features detailed descriptions of risks and their root causes. This has led to improved governance and control measures, making risk management more precise and reliable.

Escient’s engagement with Airservices Australia addressed pressing challenges in data integrity and management, laying a foundation for continuous improvement in portfolio governance. This initiative was distinguished by its one-on-one approach to stakeholder interactions, which not only refined risk management practices but also built a strong rapport and trust among team members. Combining analytical rigour with proactive stakeholder engagement, we set a new benchmark for standards for efficiency and reliability within the organisation.
